Nowadays, kids and adults face a lot of stress in their daily lives. Wouldn't it be great if playing the piano is therapeutic and stressfree?
Which is why, I don't really think that exams or competitions should be too much of an emphasis to kids who are learning the piano. Why do parents insist that kids complete grade 8 by PSLE? Or, they should take part in competitions so that there is a track record for the kid to enter into DSA (direct school admissions).
I really think that successful piano players are those with some talent, lots of perserverance and grit, and enjoy being by themselves to work on a piece of music. In other words, if you are short attention span, then maybe picking up the skill to play piano is not ideal. Or maybe you were forced into learning the piano by a parent, but you find yourself bored with no interest in music. Yes, I hear this one a lot. Some dropped out as kids, and returned to playing the piano when there is no more need to do piano exams.
